The very first coproduction between North Korea and western nations takes the form of an entertaining combination between underdog story and classic rom-com. Miner Kim Yong-mi is a model worker and an amazingly skilled amateur acrobat to boot, whose spontaneous routines delight her coworkers. When she is transferred to the capital Pyongyang, she wants to realise her secret dream of becoming a trapeze artist. There is only one problem ? Yong-mi is afraid of heights! Six year in the making, the film stars actual circus artists. The North Korea that is presented is a utopia in pastel colours where constantly optimistic citizens deliver ideologically orthodox lines. From a political perspective, the dark reality of the dictatorship is chiefly notable in its complete absence.
