In Denis Coté's debut All That She Wants (GIFF, 2009) the subject was quaint characters living a bit off the beaten path. Here he turns his gaze elsewhere. Meet Jean-Paul Colmer, 74, who has collected some 4 000 wrecked cars. Over the years they have grown together with nature, becoming their own landscape. If everything in his home and surroundings seems a complete mess, Jean-Paul's own life is minutely planned. One day, however, his existence is disrupted by a group of people trying to claim his territory. What is truth? What is fiction? Coté suspends the rules forcing films into different categories. Carcasses is like its own soundtrack, a mix of Mahler and punk, and with a cinematography which, as one critic put it, brings Flemish portrait paintings to mind.
