Icons were young once, too. Nowhere Boy is about John Lennon's youth right up to the first tentative steps of The Beatles. We follow him hitting on girls, getting expelled from school and, not the least, seeing Elvis and wanting to become a rock star. John's encounter with goody two-shoes Paul is naturally a key scene, but the focus tends to be on his conflict-ridden upbringing between two women - his mother and her sister. The latter were to take care of him for most of his childhood and is played by the always brilliant Kristin Scott Thomas. Artist Sam Taylor Wood debuts as a director with a light touch, creating a colourful film in every aspect, which wonderfully captures the spirit of its time. And when Lennon's song Mother rolls across the final scene, there's nary a dry eye in the theatre. Andreas Degerhammar
