On the surface, this story of a prematurely born child resembles an updated Brink of Life, Bergman's 1952 maternity ward film. But Comencini opts to focus on a main character, Maria, a strong but bewildered woman who breaks up with the father and alone waits for the verdict about whether the child will start to breathe on its own. Ace actress Margherita Buy lends the somewhat neurotic mother "who isn't pregnant but still expecting" clarity and credibility in this sympathetic film version, which occasionally does reveal its literary basis. Naples plays a supporting role - in a different light than as a Mob nest.
