Israeli Waltz with Bashir och American Bill Plympton front heavy animation programme

One of this year's most talked-about films - the Israeli Waltz with Bashir - will get its Swedish premiere during the 32nd festival. On top of that legendary American animator Bill Plympton will visit with his new feature film Idiots and Angels and a retrospective with 14 shorts.

During the festival in Cannes Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman was one of the most talked-about films. Recently the film was nominated for a Golden Globe. Waltz with Bashir treats the subject of the war between Israel and Lebanon in the beginning of the 80s. Its style moves from realistic interviews to surrealistic dream sequences, memories and hallucinations.

Animation is big in Israel. At least five animated feature length films are being produced in the country at the moment. To get at broader picture our programme contains 24 short films under the title Not a War Story - A look at recent Israeli animation.

The political theme continues; we screen Chicago 10, like Waltz with Bashir, an animated documentary. Chicago 10 is directed by American Brett Morgen and is a piece of American contemporar y history about the trials of a group of opponents to the war in Vietnam.

This year's animator in focus is the popular American animator Bill Plympton who in the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s became well known for his animations for MTV. Plympton is a modern heir of legends as Tex Avery or Chuck Jones and is above all an entertainer who wants to make the audience laugh. We screen his new feature film Idiots and Angels as well as 14 short films. Plympton will hold a Master Class as part of the festival seminar programme.

Another prominent guest is Priit Pärn from Estonia, with his film Life Without Gabriella Ferri, which he directed in cooperation with his wife Olga Pärn. Priit Pärn became internationally acclaimed already during the Soviet era when he created his early satirical films.

Last but not least we also screen a programme with a selection of the year's best animated short films.

We wish you a Happy New Year!
